Vontae Davis, CB, Illinois 6’0” 203lbs. – This junior comes from NFL bloodlines as he is the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers tight end Vernon Davis another physical specimen (must run in the family). Davis offers the perfect combination of size and speed as six foot plus corners are at a premium in the NFL with a sub 4.4 forty time. As a potential workout warrior like his elder brother, Davis should showcase undeniable athleticism and limitless potential at an impact position on defense. The combine always sends prospects into orbit and the lore of the event makes Davis a shoe-in for becoming infamous this February. With a physique that ressembles something chisled out of granite, Davis will impress right out the gates by looking more like a professional than a collegiate player from the onset. In his short stint as a starter for the Illini he has accumulated 6 interceptions and 16 pass breakups as well highlighting his nose for the football and willingness to hit receivers in the mouth. Davis has gone up against the opponent’s number one receiver week after week and shut them down repeatedly as well. With the competition in the Big Ten at the wide receiver position that is nothing to sneeze at. The term shutdown corner is thrown around rather liberally these days with many guys trying to stake their claims at that title. Davis offers potential to blossom quickly into an upper echelon NFL corner and basically cut the field in half for the opposing signal caller. His upside potential makes him a must in the top ten this April and he might even get consideration as the top corner taken. As the draft falls of course surprises happen, but Al Davis is known for routinely choosing the most freakish athlete rather than the best all-around football player with a proven track record available. This is shaping up to be another one of those occasions with Jenkins likely off the board at this point and Oakland’s secondary regressing a bit as a unit this past season, placing Davis opposite Nnamdi Asomugha gives immediate credibility to their defense and gives them the potential of two shutdown corners for the foreseeable future. Oakland could look at an offensive lineman when faced with this decision as well, but all signs point to Davis going with potential over proven commodity as he has done so many times in the past.
