Ted Thompson Must Allow Favre to Play in 2008

If Packers GM Ted Thompson wants to win in 2008 he should let Brett Favre play. It could be a huge mistake if Favre is traded or released.

The Green Bay Packers could make one of the biggest mistakes in franchise history by not allowing Brett Favre to return this upcoming season. It could be as bad or worse as in 1989 when Green Bay selected Tony Mandarich over Barry Sanders…Oops.

Favre a backup? Aaron Rogers leading Titletown to the Superbowl? Both very unlikely scenarios. GM Ted Thompson must not know how to win in the NFL with the decision he is currently pondering by benching Favre. The Packers are ready for the Superbowl now, but not if Brett is holding a clipboard or somewhere else in 2008.

Arguably the best quarterback to ever play in the NFL, Favre should be able to change his mind. The Packers wanted Favre to make a decision to early and he made the wrong one, can you blame him? Favre was tired and beat up after 17 years in the league. He felt pressure from the organization to step down and let Rogers play, he obliged. Now Favre decided he didn’t really want to retire but was maybe forced to make a quick decision to soon about his future.

Why would Thompson even consider trading a legend like Favre? Wouldn’t trading quarterback Aaron Rogers make more sense? If Rogers is a franchise quarterback his trade value should be worth more than a middle-aged, almost retired quarterbacks. What team would give the farm to rent Favre for $12 million and one year?

If Thompson feels so sure about Rogers talents why did he draft a quarterback (Brian Brohm) with his first pick in the 2008 draft? The Packers needed a cornerback but Thompson traded his 1st round pick and took Brohm early in the second round. There were plenty of suitable quarterbacks in that draft, Ted could have waited and drafted what the team needed first.

GM Ted Thompson wore out his welcome with Seattle, and if he lets Brett go he may do the same in Green Bay. Sure some fans may be upset with Favre now, but when he leads them to the playoffs they’ll love him again. NBA player Kobe Bryant trashed the Lakers and wanted out of L.A. before the ’07-’08 season and wound up winning the league MVP with L.A. All was forgiven when Kobe lead the Lakers to the finals, as all will be forgiven when Favre takes Titletown to the top of the NFC North standings.

Brian Brohm was considered one of the best quarterbacks in the 2008 draft, if Favre returns for one or two more years Brohm will be more then ready to lead Titletown in 2009 or 2010.

Memo to Thompson- swallow your pride and let Brett back and do Aaron Rogers a favor and trade him. Favre is to Green Bay what peanut butter is to jelly. With what Rogers has to put up with now do you think he’ll re-sign when he becomes a free agent in two years? Probably not.

If Favre is traded and Rogers fails to fulfill his expectations the city of Green Bay will be calling for Ted Thompson’s head. Brett is a legend and should be the Packers starting quarterback until he is ready to retire.
