Packers to Trade Brett FavreQuarterback Distraction in Green BayJul 24, 2008 Derek J Griebenow
Green Bay Packers and GM Ted Thompson have been encouraged by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to resolve the situation involving retired quarterback Brett Favre.
Favre Wants to Play in 2008Brett Favre may be unretiring and has yet to file for reinstatement into the NFL, but the Packers have started looking for teams interested in the 38 year-old quarterback. Is it imaginable for the Packers to trade their Hall of Fame quarterback? If Brett comes back, it could very well be for a new team in 2008. Let’s look at five possible destinations should he play this upcoming season. 1. Tampa Bay BuccaneersEveryone knows Jon Gruden loves quarterbacks, so Tampa is surely an option for Favre. Gruden was also a coordinator for Green Bay in the early 1990’s when Favre was a young starting quarterback in the NFL. Tampa Bay runs the same west coast offense the Packers do. Jeff Garcia, the current starting QB, lead Tampa to the playoffs last season Gruden would surely bench him in favor of Brett and possibly even trade Garcia to be Aaron Rogers back-up in Green Bay. 2. Buffalo BillsIf Buffalo truly wants to relocate to Canada, having Favre at quarterback would boost the teams revenue in 2008. Ticket sales in Canada and New York would definitely sell out with a Hall of Fame player under center. Buffalo finished 7-9 in 2007 but adding Brett could take them over the hump and into the playoffs. Seeing Favre play the Patriots twice a year would also be interesting. Following a 1-15 season, new boss Bill Parcells tries to right the Dolphins ship; adding Favre could do just that. Parcells likes his veteran quarterbacks ( Bledsoe, Testarverde), so why not add Favre? 3.Miami DolphinsMiami has two young quarterbacks in John Beck (1yr.) and Chad Henne (rookie) so they could utilize the time behind Brett to learn. Learning from a legend could be a good experience for both players. Adding a quarterback of Brett’s caliber could turn Miami from worst- to- first in the AFC. 4. Houston TexansSure the Texans spent a lot of money in 2007 on quarterback Matt Schaub and have Sage Rosenfels who played well in ‘07. But could such a young talented team in the playoff hunt deny the chance on acquiring a Hall of Fame quarterback? The Texans finished ’07 8-8, and in a division (AFC South) where 3 of 4 teams reached the playoffs, adding Brett would make it the most competitive division in all of the NFL. Favre would immediately turn Houston into a playoff team, making not just the Dallas Cowboys the only Superbowl contender in Texas. 5. Minnesota VikingsNow Ted Thompson will not trade Brett Favre to a NFC North team; especially the team he is currently filing tampering charges against. But the Vikings could very well be the team of Favre’s choice should he get released. Favre would reunite with Minnesota’s offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, a former quarterbacks coach with the Packers. Running the same offense as the Packers, Favre could step in and take over the quarterbacks job rather easily. And with the weapons already on offense and stout defense, Minnesota would be the team to beat in the NFC in ‘08. Packers May Have to Release FavreThings would have to get real ugly for Favre to be released, but he does have veto power over any trade the Packers attempt. If the Pack can’t find a team suitable to Brett’s desires, and they truly don’t want him in Green Bay next year, they may just have no choice but to release him. Paying $12 million dollars for a bench warmer is not something Green Bay would like to do. If they cannot find a suitor to take Favre; releasing him is the only other option for GM Ted Thompson. That’s when it’ll get real interesting as training camp is just days away ( July 27th for Green Bay).
