The New York Jets are wearing throwback gold and navy jerseys during certain games this 2009 NFL season to celebrate the AFL's 50th anniversary.

Although the team usually wears green and white, for selective games in the 2009 season, the Jets will be wearing throwback jerseys. A look at the franchise's history reveals why the New York Jets' gold and blue jerseys are being worn at times this season, though they have not been donned by the squad for years.

History of the Franchise and the New York Jets' Gold and Blue Jerseys

The franchise began as the New York Titans in 1960, and at the time, the teams was in the American Football League (AFL), which was a separate league from the NFL. Although the name (Titans) only lasted a few years (and the team became the Jets in 1963), the early Jets team wore gold and navy blue uniforms while it was still part of the AFL. In 1970, the AFL merged with the NFL, and the original eight teams that had made up the American Football League became the American Football Conference (AFC) of the national Football League.

The 2009 NFL season is the 50th anniversary of the AFL, which went on to become one of the two conferences in the National Football League. Although the AFL had eight teams originally, after the merger with the NFL, other franchises emerged. The New York Jets, being one of the original eight AFL teams (though the franchise began as the Titans of New York), will be seen wearing blue and gold jerseys during certain games this season, to honor the original team of the franchise.

50th Anniversary of the AFL in 2009

The New York Jets' blue and gold jerseys are not the only unusual looking uniforms worn this season. All of the teams that were in the original American Football League will be seen wearing throwback jerseys for certain games this season. The referees will also be wearing orange, as the refs did in the AFL 50 years ago. Although many franchises have changed locations and names (such as the Kansas City Chiefs, who began as the Dallas Texans, and are therefore wearing Texas logos once donned by the Texans on their helmets in some games this year), some have remained in the same places, and have maintained the same mascotts, although most teams have changed their uniforms significantly over the years.

As the AFL is remembered in the 2009 NFL season, teams of the AFC that originally made up the AFL are going to be seen wearing unfamiliar jerseys at times. The New York Jets' throwback jerseys will be brought out for selective games.
