Jet Brett Wins Big Apple DebutAaron Rogers Leads Packers to Victory in Monday Night Debut
Although they play on separate teams, Brett Favre and Aaron Rogers will be forever linked. Both quarterbacks played well and lead their teams to victory to start 1-0.
Chad Pennington and the Dolphins almost upset the Jets, but were edged 20-14 in Miami. In his 253rd consecutive start, Brett Favre starts a new saga with a win. It’s not the green and gold Favre is used to, but a win felt just as good in green and white. Favre helped the Jets beat the Dolphins for the fifth straight time. Brett Favre completed his very first pass as a Jet to Laveranues Coles for five yards (Coles only reception of the game). A short pass, but it didn’t take long for his first touchdown. On the Jets second series of the game, Favre called a play action pass. The Dolphins defense bit on the fake, Favre found receiver Jerricho Cotchery for a 56 yard touchdown. Chad Pennington answered back in the second quarter, tossing a five yard touchdown to tight end Anthony Fasano, tying the game at seven. Not to be outdone, following the Dolphins score, the Jets were facing 4th and 13 on the Dolphins 22 yard line, an easy field goal, but kicker Mike Nugent suffered a thigh injury in the first quarter on a missed field goal attempt. The Jets went for it on fourth down and retro Favre made an appearance. It appeared as he dropped back that he would be sacked; not vintage Favre. He shrugged off the defense and just as he got hit, lobbed up a pass as only Favre can. Second year receiver Chanci Stuckey leaped at the front of the end zone and caught the ball for six points. Ted Thompson had to go buy some new pants back in Green Bay after that play. It wasn’t an easy victory but a win is a win in the NFL. Pennington had a chance to beat his former team, but cornerback Darrelle Revis intercepted him in the end zone to seal the win. The Favre saga heads to New York and will take on the Brady-less Patriots in week two. Aaron Rogers Beats the Vikings on Monday Night FootballAaron Rogers won his first ever career start over the Vikings in Green Bay 24-19. At center stage on Monday Night Football, Rogers looked poised and ready to start a new saga of his own in Green Bay. Trailing 3-0 in the second quarter, Rogers did what that other Packers quarterback was best known for. On the Packers first scoring drive of the game, Rogers rolled out, looked downfield, and then bombed it 56 yards to Greg Jennings. After a couple Viking penalties at the goal line, Rodgers found fullback Korey Hall for a touchdown with an incredible over the shoulder throw. Favre who? After going up 7-3 on that pass, the Packers never looked back. In the third quarter, cornerback Will Blackmon returned a punt 76 yards for another touchdown. The final daggers came with Packers running back Ryan Grant taking advantage of last seasons #1 ranked rush defense. Grant found a hole in the line and blasted through 56 yards to the Vikings one yard line. Rogers got his second touchdown of the day after that run with a quarterback sneak. Rogers also had a 21 yard scamper earlier in the game. The victory was Rogers after safety Atari Bigby intercepted Tarvaris Jackson with less than a minute remaining in regulation. Aaron Rogers Monday Night StatsRogers finished the game 18/22 with 178 yards and a touchdown. Along with the 35 rushing yards, and the sneak for six, he had a great game. There’s a new sheriff in Green Bay. Rogers showed there’s no doubt he can play; now can he stay healthy?
