Favre to Vikings is InevitableIt's Not a Matter of 'If' Brett Favre Becomes a Viking, It's When. The Vikings are known around the National Football League as a team with a stout defence and runningback Adrian Peterson. That is soon going to change.
Since head coach Brad Childress arrived in Minnesota, his team's record has steadily improved, going 6-10 in year one, 8-8 in 2007 and 10-6 last season which resulted in a NFC North Division title. But despite the steady improvement on the field, Vikings fans can't help but be a bit loquasious. Talk to a fan and he or she will probably tell you the team is a 'quarterback away' from being a serious contender. Do you blame them? Childress has accumulated a number of talented football players but has never been able to find that 'franchise' quarterback that fans have been clamoring for since he arrived. Enter: Brett FavreThe Vikings are in a tough spot. The team is well aware of Favre and his 'antics' the past few seasons. But what does this team have to lose? It's not like they have a full fledged 'franchise' quarterback of their own. They have Tarvaris Jackson, a 2006 second round draft pick that has not lived up to expectations thus far. They also have a 31-year old journeyman who looks to make a name for himself in Sage Rosenfels, who was acquired via trade from the Houston Texans this offseason. Favre has been contemplating retirement for years, and finally did so last year only to return via trade to the New York Jets. After a second retirement this offseason, reports have begun to surface recently of the quarterback wanting to play another season. Do the Vikings take a chance on a quarterback that is all but assured a spot in the hall of fame? A man who has a rocket arm, but looks like he's unwilling to let go. Yes, his best years are behind him. But the question remains. What if? What if Favre becomes a Viking? What Will Favre do for a Vikings Team on the Brink of a Super Bowl RunFavre at 39 years of age, will turn 40 before the 2009 season is over, but the records speak for themselves. Favre played quite well at the beginning of last season but began to wear down at the end of the year. But consider this: Favre will not be asked to win the game because he doesn't have to. The pieces are already in place. He will be asked to complement an already solid running attack. He will be asked to throw to an up and coming receiving core which includes first round draft pick Percy Harvin. Plus he will be asked to bring leadership and presence in a huddle that's in dire need of it. But most importantly, with all the uncertainty that surrounds the Vikings future in Minnesota, just think of what a Brett Favre can do financially? The old adage 'where there's smoke, there's fire' rings true most of the time. In the case of Brett Favre becoming a Minnesota Viking, fire trucks are standing by.
