Favre To The Vikings Could Ruin His Career AgainA Second Comeback Could Result In Another Disappointing Attempt
For the second year in a row, talks have swirled around the league about another comeback by Brett Favre. Only this time, he could sign with a team other than the Jets.
Even when Brett Favre declares his intentions to stay retired, the possibility of another comeback continues to make headlines. Vikings Show Interest in Signing FavreAfter meeting with Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress and expressing his interest to stay retired, the team's president, Mark Wilf, is interested in bringing the hall of famer out of retirement for the second time in less than a year. It's hard to turn down a quarterback who holds the all time record with career numbers of 464 touchdowns and 65,127 yards. However, Wilf and the rest of the Vikings franchise need to realize the signing of Favre would be the biggest mistake in the world. For starters, if the Vikings believe Favre has what it takes to play a full season at quarterback, all they need to do is look back to last season. Favre Rises and Falls as a JetThrough the first twelve weeks of the regular season, the team was a surprise contender in the AFC East with an 8-3 record. He was looking like his old self with the Packers by already throwing for 20 touchdowns and over 2,400 yards. At this point in the season, it seemed impossible for the Jets not to make the playoffs. All they had to do was win a few more games and they would at least be guaranteed a wild card berth. Unfortunately, the Jets had to learn the hard way that in life, there are no guarantees. Especially when it comes to making the playoffs. Not only did the Jets finish the 2008 season losing four of their last five games, but Favre had one of the most disappointing endings to a season in his 18-year career. In his final five games with the Jets, Favre threw just 2 touchdown passes and 9 interceptions. It may not seem fair to blame the Jets' late season collapse on him, but at the same time it's hard not to. If Favre Returns, Will He Be in Decent Shape? Toward the end of last season, Favre was criticized by the media for looking worn out. He looked as if he forgot what it was like to play a full season as a starting quarterback. One of the reasons this may be true is because of his off-season tactics. Favre announced his first comeback with the Jets a few weeks before pre-season games took place. Even though he missed a majority of the offseason workouts, he still found a way to learn the Jets offense and play at a competitive level. If Favre decides to sign with Minnesota, the Vikings may be facing a more difficult situation than they expect. Not only would he have to get back into shape where he could perform again at the NFL level, but he would have to recover from the shoulder injury he suffered from last season. This means a potential Favre return to the NFL would consist of recovering from a shoulder injury and getting back into shape. For the sake of the Minnesota Vikings, he needs to stay put in Mississippi with his family and not come out of retirement again. He may have the chance to succeed with Adrian Peterson by his side. Then again, he also has a chance to disappoint the Vikings and their fans by not reaching expectations. The best thing for Favre to do now is stay retired. He had a great career and will always be remembered by fans and players around the world who was passionate for the game of football. The last thing he needs to do is be remembered for is the player who attempted a comeback twice with two different teams. Two different teams in which he failed to meet their expectations.
