During the Buffalo Bills' game at home against the Patriots in week 5 of the 2009 NFL season, the Broncos sported some recently unfamiliar jerseys.

On Sunday, October 11, 2009, the Buffalo Bills wore mustard-yellow jerseys with brown pants and brown helmets. These were throwback jerseys, reminiscent of the ones donned by players on the original team of the franchise. Players be wearing the jerseys for selective games in the 2009 NFL season.

History of the Franchise and the Denver Broncos' Yellow and Brown Jerseys

The Denver Broncos were founded by Bob Howsam in 1959, who was then the owner of Minor League Baseball. This team (the Broncos) was one of the original eight American Football Conference (AFC) teams, and they were victorious over the Boston Patriots in their first game. They also became the first AFC team to beat an NFL (now simply the NFC) team after beating the Detroit Lions in a preseason game. The original jerseys worn by the Broncos were the same as the ones that they wore in week 5 of the 2009 season, as they hosted the New England Patriots.

Original Denver Broncos Jerseys Worn in Week 5

The first Denver Broncos team wore mustard-yellow jerseys with brown numbers and names. The helmets were also brown, and they depicted the players' numbers in white on the sides. The pants were also brown, with two vertical mustard-yellow stripes on each side. The players wore long socks with mustard-yellow and brown vertical stripes as well. These uniforms were dropped two years after the formation of the team, as they (particularly the socks part) were not very popular. These, however, were the same jerseys worn by Kyle Orton, Knowshown Moreno, and the rest of the Broncos team as they hosted, and defeated the Patriots in 2009.

Denver Broncos and Other AFC Throwback Jerseys

The 2009 NFL season is a celebratory one for the AFC, as it commemorates fifty years of play for the conference's original eight teams. During major matchups and rivalry games, these AFC teams may be seen wearing historic jerseys that the original franchise teams wore. That is why the Broncos wore special jerseys in week 5, as did other AFC teams, such as the Kansas City Chiefs, who wore the jerseys of their franchise's original team, the Dallas Texans. The New England Patriots also wore the jerseys that the very first Boston Patriots team wore. The Denver Broncos defeated the New England Patriots 20-17 in an overtime victory at home in Invesco Field at Mile High in Denver on October 11, 2009.

Throughout the season, teams of the AFC will be seen wearing their respective franchises' original uniforms. Continue to look for AFC teams wearing unfamiliar outfits as the season progresses.

James Kinkade :
I love the vertical striped socks. Uniforms today have little character.
