San Diego Chargers head coach Marty Schottenheimer was fired Monday for failing to take the Chargers to the Super Bowl. Even though he had the best NFL record last year.
Ok, I'll admit, living in San Diego I'm somewhat expected to be an NFL Chargers Football fan, and usually I am to a large degree. But I'm not blindly loyal to them, and have refused to support them in many of their (often rotten) decisions in the past. This is one of them. Firing Marty Shottenheimer was, in my opinion, one of the worst things they could do to this team for the team's future, and my bet is that the Chargers are going to have less than a 50% win record next season.
The Chargers fired two coaches this year who both went on to better positions elsewhere, (what does that say about the Chargers decision making without even taking into consideration what they did yesterday to Marty?) Then they fired one of the best coaches the Chargers ever had in my memory. What's next? Are they going to trade LaDainian Tomlinson for some rookie kicker?
There have been some really good times, including the early days (early for me, anyway) of Charger greats Dan Fouts (with the Chargers from 1973-1987), and Don (Air) Coryell (with the Chargers from 1978-1986.) But I have to tell you, I'm sick and tired of the bad decision making going on at Chargers headquarters, and will be making my feelings known to San Diego in general, and Alex Spanos in particular.
