A Look Back at Week 4 in the NFL

Redskins Defeat Cowboys, Favre Sets Record, Bills Remain Undefeated

Sep 29, 2008 Justin Harrington

It's early in the 2008/09 NFL season, but like every year there's plenty of headlines and dramatic action on the gridiron. Four weeks down and 13 to go.

They said he was over the hill, his better days behind him. After 17 glorious seasons with the Packers and a short "retirement" in the off-season, Favre found himself as quarterback of the New York Jets and had seemed to be struggling to learn their offense. That was until this Sunday when the man of many NFL records set a new one for himself with a career-high six touchdown passes. The 56-35 win over the Arizona Cardinals also moved the Jets' record to 2-2 and has them in the thick of the early-season AFC East standings.

Buffalo Moves to 4-0

On Sunday, the Bills allowed the St. Louis Rams to take their first lead all season in the first quarter before they outscored them 25-0 in the second half en route to a 31-14 win. The Bills are 4-0 for the first time since 1992 and look poised to challenge for the AFC East, especially since the New England Patriots are without Tom Brady for the rest of the season. Impressive quarterback Trent Edwards will lead his Bills into Arizona next week and face a big test against LaDainian Tomlinson and his San Diego Chargers two weeks later.

Titans Remain Undefeated

The Tennessee Titans are off to their best start in franchise history after a 30-17 win over the Minnesota Vikings gave them a 4-0 record. The biggest surprise about the Titans' start to the season is that they're doing it with Kerry Collins at quarterback, not Vince Young. But their biggest offensive threat so far has been the running back tandem of Chris Johnson and LenDale White (8 touchdowns combined). On defense, tackle Albert Haynesworth (5 sacks), cornerback Cortland Finnegan (4 interceptions) and free safety Michael Griffin (3 interceptions, 1 sack) have provided the spark.

'Boys Fall to 'Skins

Many NFL pundits crowned the Dallas Cowboys as the favorites to win this year's Super Bowl. Those same pundits had also singled out the NFC East as the most competitive division in football. It's probably much harder to argue with the latter point as Washington stunned the crowd at Texas stadium on Sunday with a convincing 26-24 triumph over Dallas that moved the Redskins, Cowboys and New York Giants into a three-way tie in the standings at 3-1. The Philadelphia Eagles' loss on Sunday dropped them to last in the division at 2-2. Washington quarterback Jason Campbell was solid in the game as he threw for two touchdowns and has yet to toss an interception this season. He sports a 102.2 QB rating which puts him ahead of division rivals Tony Romo (99.0) Donovan McNabb (95.7) and Eli Manning (91.1). The Redskins travel to Philadelphia to take on the Eagles next Sunday. The division is officially up for grabs.

Buccaneers Kicker Plays Through Tragedy

Just one day removed from the unfortunate death of his three-month-old son, Tryson, Matt Bryant nailed all three of his field goal kicks, including the game winner, as Tampa Bay defeated the Green Bay Packers, 30-21. After each one of his kicks sailed through the uprights, Bryant looked to the skies and gestured lovingly to his deceased son during the emotional afternoon. He later explained the importance of playing, saying, "I wanted to honor Tryson's name...it was all about him, for me."
