Who will San Diego pick in the 2009 NFL Draft?
The San Diego Chargers have seemingly always found a way to bring each NFL season down to the wire, but they continue to lose heartbreaking playoff games, it seems. So, what do the Chargers need to do to finally get over that hump and make a run at the Super Bowl? What positions do they need to upgrade in the 2009 NFL Draft in order to make a stronger run? Read on to find out. San Diego Chargers NFL Draft Team NeedsThe Chargers have the 16th pick in the 2009 NFL Draft and it could be an impact player if they make the right decision. Here are the positions they most need help at: Offensive line – Marcus McNeil is a force at the left tackle spot but the right tackle remains a potential trouble spot. There are a lot of very good tackle prospects on the board in the 2009 NFL Draft and Ole Miss' Michael Oher, while more of a left tackle by trade, seems like a great potential pick at the 16th spot in the draft for the Chargers. Oher is a good all-around tackle who can play either spot but it's up in the air as to whether he'll be left when San Diego picks. Defensive Line- Igor Olshansky signed with the Dallas Cowboys leaving a potential hole and some depth issues up front for the Chargers. While the 3-4 doesn't require an amazing assortment of depth at the d-line spot considering most of the pass rushing is done but the outside linebackers, a good all-around defensive end would be a good choice here for the Chargers. A nose tackle is also a possible pick here but the Chargers might end up going with the best player available if no difference-makers are on the board at d-line. Slot receiver- A dangerous home run threat-type receiver would be a great pick here for the Chargers. They have big playmakers at outside receiver and in the backfield and at tight end with Antonio Gates but could use another guy to work underneath and take short passes the distance. It is kind of a luxury to have but the Chargers are in a position to draft guys like that and if Percy Harvin somehow slides or if the Chargers can trade up in the 2009 NFL Draft, they should consider doing it. Inside Linebacker- A big play-maker like USC's Rey Maluaga would be an interesting choice here. The Chargers have some stout guys on the inside but once again need some difference makers at this spot if possible and a guy like Maluaga would be too good to pass up if he's still on the draft board at the 16th spot in the NFL Draft. It's not a huge team need but it is something to keep an eye on to add some young talent and depth.
